The Rivals

The Rivals

Directed by Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.

As part of their 250 th anniversary celebrations BOV are staging an elegant comedy of love and manners which has been entertaining audiences for almost as long as the Bristol Old Vic Theatre itself. Inspired by Sheridan's own romantic entanglements, which fed the gossip-mongers of his day with endless scandal and tittle-tattle, his first and most-loved play will transport you to Bath in 1775 where social climber and "pineapple of politeness" Mrs Malaprop is busy matchmaking on behalf of her niece Lydia Languish. Lydia however wishes to marry for love not money and this leads to many complications which prove to be hilarious.
